RESUMO

Spin is a fundamental degree of freedom, which was discovered by Dirac for an electron in his relativistic quantum mechanics, known as the Dirac equation. The origin of spin for a photon is unclear because Maxwell's equations in a vacuum are Lorentz invariant without introducing the concept of spin. Here, the propagation of coherent rays of photons in a graded-index optical fibre is considered to discuss the origin of polarisation for photons using exact solutions of the Laguerre-Gauss and Hermite-Gauss modes. The energy spectrum is massive, and the effective mass is a function of the confinement and orbital angular momentum. The propagation is described by the one-dimensional (1D) non-relativistic Schrödinger equation, which is equivalent to the 2D space-time Klein-Gordon equation by a unitary transformation. The probabilistic interpretation and the conservation law require the factorisation of the Klein-Gordon equation, leading to the 2D Dirac equation with spin. The spin expectation values of photons correspond to the polarisation state on the Poincaré sphere. As an application of the theory, a polarisation interferometer is proposed, whose energy spectrum shows a Dirac cone in the Stokes parameter space.

RESUMO

While the Ebers Papyrus is understood to be one of the oldest and most complete contemporaneous perspectives on Ancient Egyptian healing practices, nothing has yet been said about the biography of its first English-language translator, Dr. Carl H. von Klein. A German immigrant and surgeon in the American Midwest, von Klein spent twenty-some years meticulously translating and annotating the Papyrus, but ultimately his manuscript was destroyed. In this paper, we examine the societal- and personal-scale forces that thwarted his efforts to transform our understanding of the history of medicine.

RESUMO

Phylogenetics is the study of ancestral relationships among biological species. Such sequence analyses are often represented as phylogenetic trees. The branching pattern of each tree and its topology reflect the evolutionary relatedness between analyzed sequences. We present a Klein four-group algorithm (K4A) for the evolutionary analysis of nucleotide and amino acid sequences. Klein four-group set of operators consists of: identity e (U), and three elements-a = transition (C), b = transversion (G) and c = transition-transversion or complementarity (A). We generated Klein four-group based distance matrices of: 1. Cayley table (CK4), 2. Table rows (K4R), 3. Table columns (K4C), and 4. Euclidean 2D distance (K4E). The performance of the matrices was tested on a dataset of RecA proteins in bacteria, eukaryotes (Rad51 homolog) and archaea (RadA homolog). RecA and its functional homologs are found in all species, and are essential for the repair and maintenance of DNA. Consequently, they represent a good model for the study of evolutionary relationship of protein and nucleotide sequences. The ancestral relationship between the sequences was correctly classified by all K4A matrices concerning general topology. All distance matrices exhibited small variations among species, and overall results of tree classification were in agreement with the general patterns obtained by standard BLOSUM and PAM substitution matrices. During the evolution of a code there is a phase of optimization of system rules, the ambiguity of a code is eliminated, and the system starts producing specific components. Klein four-group algorithm is consistent with the concept of ambiguity reduction. It also enables the use of different genetic code table variants optimized for particular transitions in evolution based on biological specificity.

RESUMO

Transference interpretation has always been regarded as very important to psychoanalytic practice. However, analysts differ on its centrality relative to other forms of intervention. This paper argues that transference interpretation as introduced by Freud and then taken up and developed by Klein ("transference interpretation proper") is, in fact, the only form of intervention that could bring about essentially analytic change. To understand why, a taxonomy of different forms of intervention commonly practiced within the analytic situation is presented, including interventions that relate to transference, but do not constitute transference interpretation proper. The latter kind is then described in detail. Next, the paper defines analytic change. It relies on a particular perspective on what it is to come to know psychic truth; one that sees such knowing as a lived state of mind, rather than a state of having knowledge about one's dynamics. This foundational Freudian perspective has been especially advanced through Klein's notion of phantasy. Given this view of analytic change it becomes clear that it can only be brought about through transference interpretation proper. The paper also addresses reasons why it seems especially difficult to embrace this view in contemporary psychoanalytic culture, while stressing how crucial it is to do so.

RESUMO

The article presents IUPAC ambiguity codes for incomplete nucleic acid specification, and their use in Code Biology. It is shown how to use this nomenclature in order to extract accurate information on different properties of the biological systems. We investigated the use of ambiguity codes, as mathematical and logical operators and truth table elements, for the encoding of amino acids by means of the Standard Genetic Code. It is explained how to use ambiguity codes and truth functions in order to obtain accurate information on different properties of the biological systems. Nucleotide ambiguity codes could be applied to: 1. encoding descriptive information of nucleotides, amino acids and proteins (e.g., of polarity, relative solvent accessibility, atom depth, etc.), and 2. system modelling ranging from standard bioinformatics tools to classic evolutionary models (i.e. from Miyazawa-Jernigan statistical potential to Kimura three-substitution-type model, respectively). It is shown that the algorithms based on IUPAC ambiguity codes, Boolean functions and truth table, Probabilistic Square of Opposition/Semiotic Square and Klein 4-groups-could be used for the bioinformatics analyses and Relational data modelling in natural science. Underlying mathematical, logical and semiotic concepts of interest are presented and addressed.

RESUMO

In 1930, Melanie Klein published an article presenting the case of Dick. Within the framework of the psychoanalytic technique adapted to the clinical treatment of autism, this article contributes elements to a question posed by many psychoanalysts: why did Klein's interventions affect Dick? To that end, Klein's first intervention is divided into two phases: a first naming phase, consented to by Dick; and a second interpretation phase, triggering detachment from the object, anxiety, and stereotypy. The proposal is to understand the emergence of anxiety in the relationship that the second-phase interpretation has with the first phase of naming.

RESUMO

Klein-Gordon equation characterizes spin-particles through neutral charge field within quantum particle. In this context, fractionalized Klein-Gordon equation is investigated for the comparative analysis of the newly presented fractional differential techniques with non-singularity among kernels. The non-singular and non-local kernels of fractional differentiations have been employed on Klein-Gordon equation for the development of governing equation. The analytical solutions of Klein-Gordon equation have been traced out by fractional techniques by means of Laplace transforms and expressed in terms of series form and gamma function. The data analysis of fractionalized Klein-Gordon equation is observed for Pearson's correlation coefficient, probable error and regression analysis. For the sake of comparative analysis of fractional techniques, 2D sketch, 3D pie chart, contour surface with projection and 3D bar sketch have been depicted on the basis of embedded parameters. Our results suggest that varying frequency has reversal trends for quantum wave and de Broglie wave.

RESUMO

In this paper the author offers a new reading of Freud's "Remembering, Repeating and Working-through", examining the complex nature of central concepts that Freud presents within it. She demonstrates the text's special role in an ongoing effort of Freud's to articulate and ground the heart of his analytic insight that knowledge cures. While the insight itself is very well-known, the fact that Freud struggled throughout his life with its articulation and grounding is not. The struggle centered on questions pertaining to how analytic knowing could, not only enlighten the patient, but actually change his unconscious dynamics, and why the patient, having already "opted" for pathology in place of knowing would come to accept it; and ultimately, what was the nature of the knowledge offered in analysis and the individual's relationship to it that allowed for such dramatic changes to occur. The author briefly presents some of her earlier work on Freud's struggle with these issues and how Melanie Klein resolved them. It is in this context that she demonstrates how in Remembering, Repeating and Working-through" Freud may be seen to be taking important steps towards developing his ideas on analytic knowing and in ways that anticipate Klein's resolutions. This points to the close tie between Klein's and Freud's thinking on the nature of the analytic process and the person's desire for self-knowledge on which it relies, brings out the richness of this thinking and grounds its value to contemporary psychoanalysis.

RESUMO

Photonic gauge potentials, including scalar and vector ones, play fundamental roles in emulating photonic topological effects and for enabling intriguing light transport dynamics. While previous studies mainly focus on manipulating light propagation in uniformly distributed gauge potentials, here we create a series of gauge-potential interfaces with different orientations in a nonuniform discrete-time quantum walk and demonstrate various reconfigurable temporal-refraction effects. We show that for a lattice-site interface with the potential step along the lattice direction, the scalar potentials can yield total internal reflection (TIR) or Klein tunneling, while vector potentials manifest direction-invariant refractions. We also reveal the existence of penetration depth for the temporal TIR by demonstrating frustrated TIR with a double lattice-site interface structure. By contrast, for an interface emerging in the time-evolution direction, the scalar potentials have no effect on the packet propagation, while the vector potentials can enable birefringence, through which we further create a "temporal superlens" to achieve time-reversal operations. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate electric and magnetic Aharonov-Bohm effects using combined lattice-site and evolution-step interfaces of either scalar or vector potential. Our work initiates the creation of artificial heterointerfaces in synthetic time dimension by employing nonuniformly and reconfigurable distributed gauge potentials. This paradigm may find applications in optical pulse reshaping, fiber-optic communications, and quantum simulations.

RESUMO

Working through the different faces and vicissitudes of the death drive in the countertransference, and especially through projective identification, is a very challenging process. A thorough and versatile process of containment and working through of the manifold threatening expressions and influences of the death drive is required, experienced most specifically and deeply in the arena of projective identification. This paper demonstrates how each aspect that unfolds in the analyst's countertransference sheds light on a particular layer of anxiety and internal object relations related to it. The creation of a new meaning to the differing expressions of the death drive gradually lessens the compulsion to repeat and enables a better integration between the life and death drives. This process will be illustrated by a prolonged clinical case that involved intense internal working through of the death drive in the analyst's countertransference.

RESUMO

Eponyms, while inherently flawed, remain a constant in medical vernacular, especially in orthopaedic surgery. It is essential to understand how these eponyms came to be named and for whom they were named after in order to know the correct usage and definition of these eponyms. In this first part, we describe the history of eponym usage in paediatric hip radiography; who, when, what, where, and how. We hope to provide a historical perspective of interest, resolve any controversies in semantic definitions, and create a comprehensive library of eponymous terms related to paediatric hip radiography.

RESUMO

This study presents a modification form of modified simple equation method, namely new modified simple equation method. Multiple waves and interaction of soliton solutions of the Phi-4 and Klein-Gordon models are investigated via the scheme. Consequently, we derive various novels and more general interaction, and multiple wave solutions in term of exponential, hyperbolic, and trigonometric, rational function solutions combining with some free parameters. Taking special values of the free parameters, interaction of two dark bells, interaction of two bright bells, two kinks, two periodic waves, kink and soliton, kink-rogue wave solutions are obtained which is the key significance of this method. Properties of the achieved solutions have many useful descriptions of physical behavior, correlated to the solutions are attained in this work through plentiful 3D figures, density plot and 2D contour plots. The results derived may increase the prospect of performing significant experimentations and carry out probable applications.

The loss of a loved one is an experience that mobilizes intense emotional pain, potentiated by unconscious fantasies of those who experience it. The bereaved person believes that their good objects have been lost and that the bad objects have become dominant. This puts the internal world in imminent danger of disintegrating. Resolution occurs when the subject is able to restore his or her love bond with the object through reparation. This study aims to analyze the psychic components at stake in the grieving process experienced after the suicide of a loved one from Melanie Klein's psychoanalytic theory point of view. To this end, we investigate the bereavement of a fictional character, the protagonist of a Japanese animated film that deals with the various stages of mourning. With the support of family and friends, the acceptance of the loss of the loved one was gradually established in the internal world, allowing the character to acquire more confidence in his constructive tendencies. The film shows how the experience of mourning by suicide, as challenging as it may be, can be healthily elaborated, resulting in ego strengthening and emotional growth for the survivors.

RESUMO

This paper explores the psychoanalytic contribution to the understanding of war. It takes as its frame of reference the conditions of possibility in the human subject that form the basis for the detonation of such extremes of destruction. Starting with key papers of Freud that address this malaise of our "civilization" it goes on to consider the contributions from the Kleinian school (particularly Money-Kyrle and Segal). The argument is situated within a frame of reference which views the psychoanalytic contribution as part of what the author terms an interdisciplinary conversation. The paper concludes with some more general considerations regarding the horrors of our contemporary world.

RESUMO

Electronic and excitonic states in an InSb strongly flattened ellipsoidal quantum dot (QD) with complicated dispersion law are theoretically investigated within the framework of the geometric adiabatic approximation in the strong, intermediate, and weak quantum confinement regimes. For the lower levels of the spectrum, the square root dependence of energy on QD sizes is revealed in the case of Kane's dispersion law. The obtained results are compared to the case of a parabolic (standard) dispersion law of charge carriers. The possibility of the accidental exciton instability is revealed for the intermediate quantum confinement regime. For the weak quantum confinement regime, the motion of the exciton's center-of-gravity is quantized, which leads to the appearance of additional Coulomb-like sub-levels. It is revealed that in the case of the Kane dispersion law, the Coulomb levels shift into the depth of the forbidden band gap, moving away from the quantum confined level, whereas in the case of the parabolic dispersion law, the opposite picture is observed. The corresponding selection rules of quantum transitions for the interband absorption of light are obtained. New selection rules of quantum transitions between levels conditioned by 2D exciton center of mass vertical motion quantization in a QD are revealed. The absorption threshold behavior characteristics depending on the QDs geometrical sizes are also revealed.

RESUMO

Massless Dirac fermions in an electric field propagate along the field lines without backscattering, due to the combination of spin-momentum locking and spin conservation. This phenomenon, known as 'Klein tunneling', may be lost if the Dirac equation is discretized in space and time, because of scattering between multiple Dirac cones in the Brillouin zone. To avoid this, a staggered space-time lattice discretization has been developed in the literature, withonesingle Dirac cone in the Brillouin zone of the original square lattice. Here we show that the staggering doubles the size of the Brillouin zone, which actually containstwoDirac cones. We find that this fermion doubling causes a spurious breakdown of Klein tunneling, which can be avoided by an alternative single-cone discretization scheme based on a split-operator approach.

RESUMO

Waardenburg syndrome is a group of genetic conditions that can cause hearing loss and pigmentation deficiency of the hair, skin, and eyes. Klein-Waardenburg syndrome (Waardenburg syndrome type 3) represents a distinct presentation of Waardenburg syndrome type 1 and includes musculoskeletal abnormalities in addition to dystopia canthorum hearing loss and pigmentary changes. Heterozygous or homozygous variants in the PAX3 gene cause Klein-Waardenburg syndrome. Here we report on a new severely affected child, with a homozygous PAX3 variant (c.251C>T; p.Ser84Phe), review the features of the syndrome, and propose a new classification. The designation of Waardenburg syndrome should be given only to patients with monoallelic pathogenic variants in PAX3 whether or not musculoskeletal abnormalities are present. Patients with biallelic PAX3 variants should be outlined as a distinct group and designated Klein syndrome.

RESUMO

Purpose of the Review: In this review, we will discuss commonly encountered pediatric sleep disorders, their clinical presentations, evaluation, and management. Recent Findings: Sleep problems are common complaints in the pediatric population with an estimated prevalence of at least 25%. This review examines frequently seen pediatric sleep disorders including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, parasomnias, and movement disorders. Their clinical manifestations vary, but left untreated, these sleep disorders result in significant impairment. A detailed sleep history is key component in the evaluation process. Other useful tools include sleep diaries, questionnaires, and actigraphy. Polysomnography is often required for diagnosis. Treatment varies depending on the underlying sleep disorder. Pharmacologic treatment is often limited due to the lack of studies of safety and efficacy in the pediatric population. Summary: Sleep disorders are commonly encountered in the pediatric population. Their clinical manifestations vary, though without treatment, many result in significant impairment. Detailed sleep history is an essential part of the evaluation process, though polysomnography is often required. Treatment depends on the underlying diagnosis.

RESUMO

Rejecting the received account, which includes procedural and semantic memory, Stanley B. Klein claims that only episodic memory is genuine memory. This is so, he asserts, because only episodic memory is partly constituted by a quale, a Nagelian "what it is like" feeling of the past. However, his actual position reveals a very different set of claims about memory, one that involves a distinctive feel, distinct from Nagelian qualia and other versions of what qualia are. We argue that Klein's actual position significantly differs from what he claims memory is. And we try to describe what Kleinian qualia should feel like. We suspect that they might not feel like anything at all. This article is categorized under: Psychology > Memory Philosophy > Consciousness Philosophy > Psychological Capacities.
